Low Protein Culinary Website Launched in August

Hi Everyone,

My daughter Molly has CPKU. When she went to kindergarten, I enrolled in culinary school. I launched a non-for-profit webiste called Cook for Love (www.cookforlove.org). I would love for those of you who are adults with PKU to offer me your opinions on the recipes (I have a thick skin, so be honest). I would like to know what you would like to see more of and less of :-) I also want to know what products you cannot get outside of the US. I can work on finding alternatives.

Thanks so much for your help!

First of all, welcome to the board, Brenda :)

I just registered at the page and now I'm looking at the recipes... great!! They all sound very good and I will try out recipes soon.

I like very much the layout of the page, it's so professional-looking - the pictures really brings up a lot of appetite ;) ! How many recipes have you already brought onto the site?

I would also appreciate if there would be the amount of calories for each recipe, because especially the PKUs have to take care of their daily calorie income (in order not to push the levels too high or not to gain too much weight since most of the products are very rich in calories ) One last thing: I don't know the measuring in cups... what is "one cup" in gramm?

Thank you so much for creating this wonderful page

Hi Kathrin,

Thanks so much for looking at the site so quickly! There are close to 50 recipes so far.

I am not sure what recipe has a cup measurement. The gram weight would vary depending upon the ingredient. A cup of sugar is 196 gm, a cup of starch 130 gm. Do you know what ingredient it was?

I had hoped the site would be launched with a full nutritional analysis, but we did not have the funding for it. As soon as we have the money, it is part of the plan to have a nutritionist calculate the calories, exact protein content, and other amino acids for those with other metabolic disorders requiring low protein diets.

Thanks again for taking the time to look at the site!

Hi Brenda,

you're welcome :) I don't know exactly what kind of ingredient it was - I just wondered... But I will note this down. In case that I have problems with the measurements, can I send you an email? :)

I think I will go shopping next week and buy the ingredients for some recipes and try them - I will post my feedback to every tried recipe!

If you are looking for recipes from other countries, I have some German, Italian, Indian and Thai recipes which I could provide!!! If you need them I would be glad to provide you :)

Have a good weekend!

If you have any questions my e-mail is -- brenda@cookforlove.org. The penne a la vodka is one of my favorite quick recipes (we all had it last night for dinner). I know you mentioned you were concerned with calories, so in the interest of full disclosure -- with the butter and cream - it is not low in fat (but it is delicious)! The chili recipe, mushroom fajitas, spaghetti bolognese and roasted mushrooms would be entrees that would be a good bit lower in fat and calories. If you are trying the roasted mushrooms with sherry gravy, serve them over the braised smashed red bliss potatoes -- they would be a lot less calories than the mashed potatoes (which have butter and cream). The biscuits are worth the calories to mop up the gravy.

Hi Brenda!
I had a look at your homepage as well. It looks great and really delicous recipes!! I don't really like cooking, but some recipes looks easy and can quick to do, which is what I am looking for ;) . A great inspiration! There are some ingredients I don't know from Germany (or Denmark, where I am living now) but I tried to look them up on the internet and think it is possible to find an alternative to those things I can't buy here.
It's wonderful to get some inspriration to recipes from the US !! It sometimes crossed my mind, what people with PKU are eating on a day like Thanksgiving - I can see you have a delicious menu on the page for this Holiday.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Famlily. And thank you for the link to the page.
Greetings Chattanooga

Low Protein Christmas Baking Series Online

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that Cook for Love (www.cookforlove.org) just added a Holiday Baking Series to our website. There are six new videos on low protein baking and decorating. We had a professional cake/cookie decorator come in and show us how to make our desserts as beautiful as they are delicious. There are recipes for gingerbread cookies, roll out sugar cookies, low protein royal icing for decorating, linzer cookies, and lots more as well as a series on cake and cupcake decorating. A full low protein Christmas Dinner Menu will be up by Monday. It will include the Make a head biscuits, mashed potatoes, string bean casserole (all already on the site) and a few new favorites.

I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday!

Hello Brenda,

thank you very much for informing us about this update of the homepage... I will have a look at it since I'm not sure what to cook for Christmas yet.

Have a merry christmas, too,

Bye,
Kathrin
