Ethnic foods

I'm totally new to this message board, so if this has come up before, please direct me to the appropriate conversation. Does anyone have info on phe counts for ethnic/vegetarian type dishes? I live in a big city with lots of variety & I know all restaurants make things differently but are there any general guidelines? I love trying different things that seem safe, but I'm trying to be stricter with my diet lately. For example, Thai & Indian veggie based dishes, sushi veggie rolls, baba ghanoush, stuff like that (just to name a few)...???

Hi Hopers,

welcome to the board.

It's difficult... if you do have a protein indication (which usually is only the case if you buy something in a store) you can calculate the phe amount like this:

Amount of protein multiplied with 30 = Phe amount of fruit based nutrition (f. e. smoothies etc.)
Amount of protein multiplied with 40 = Phe amount of vegetable based nutrition (f. e. tomatoe sauce without meat or cheese)
Amount of protein multiplied with 50 = Phe amount of all other nutrition (f. e. cheese, bread, crisps, etc.)

but in restaurants, it's not possible to get those indications of protein. Since you don't go out eating every day, I would stick to normal diet and when you go out, I would eat the vegetarian meals (without nuts, cheese, tofu etc.) without thinking too much about the phe amount.

I love sushi veggi rolls or korean salads... mhhhmmm... and when I stick to my diet and go eating out vegetarian meals once a week, there is no bad influence on my phe levels.

Thanks... I did not know the different phe counts based on fruits, vegs, etc. I had read once that nutrition guidelines can be a little flexible in terms of grams listed on packaging. For example, if something says it has 1gm of protein, it can actually have anywhere from 40-90 phes. Can you confirm that? My favorite food is Indian food...I love their curries & rice. When I'm not strict with my diet, I eat WAY too much rice.

Hey... yes I would say that 1g protein is about 50 Phe. And this is pretty exact - I know a lot of people who use this way to calulcate and they don't have problems with unexpected level raisings... But I would not use this way of calculating for high protein products (f. e. cheese) to be absolutely sure. I would rather ask my dietician in this case to get an exact indication! But for the normal day for day food, this calculation is great and a big help!
