building muscle

As most people know, building muscle is strongly associated with protein intake, which is something that we as people with PKU are limited by. So, I don't know if there's anyone in this forum who has some kind of biology background (more than me) who can answer me this: to maintain a diet that encourages muscle growth, would a PKU patient have to increase their intake of formula (their Phe free protein source) or would adding "normal" protein foods be sufficiant? I guess what I am asking is does the phenylalanine need to be processed in order to contribute to muscle growth (and therefore becoming a problem for the PKU patient) or does it become muscle tissue pre-processing? (Excuse my lack of proper terminology)

Also, as a side note, which organ/process is phenylalanine broken down in...or better question, where is it supposed to be broken down?

I am not sure where or by who I was told this, but I was told that the safest way for us to build muscle is by getting extra protein through our formula. I personally have always been a very small and muscle-less person, but I am still stronger then Amber, my twenty-year-old sister, who works out all the time. Erica on the other hand is like a brick!

Phenylalanine is suppose to be broken down by the Enzyme Phenylalanine hydroxalase or PAH, which is what we lack. I want to say that this process is suppose to occur in the liver, but I can't remember.

It's definately the liver.

I've heard that upping the formula intake can increase muscle (along with exercise and strength training). I don't know too much about biology so hopefully someone else can answer this...

i was also told to build muscle u should increase ur formula. but one thing i learnt about working out and keeping low levels at the same time is u have to bring in as much as whats going out. I go to the gym 3 days a week i use to have 25 exchanges and 1400 calrories. when i started at the gym my levels went really high and i didnt no why. so now they increased my tolerance to 35 exchanges and 1500 calories on days i dont work out and 1800 when i do.

Amanda, formula is loaded with calories. So if you increase your formula you'll be getting your calories and muscle building will be easier. It's like a two-for-one deal :).

i kinda like that i can have more food though, milk dosnet always fill me up, with higher calories i can have more fruit or low protein cause it dosnet really mess my numbers just my cals.

The Enzyme we are lacking is phenylalanine hydroxylase PAH which is brokien down by the liver. Increasing the formula is the best way of building muscle apparently and a little more Phe when a person is really active, exercising. Hope that everybody is doing well. I am looking forward in other people's responses.

formula is the perfect protein source because it is already broken down to amino acids and is absorbed easily.
Muscle growth is encouraged by weight lifting exersise routine. Protein comes in as a secondary player. Look at ti as a tetris game - you apply force to muscle by lifting weight, muscle contracts, there is occasional minor wear and tear inside the muscle, that is normal, and as a response to this exersise your body will reinforce that particular muscle by growing more muscle tissue. That is the moment where protein kicks in. You need protein for tissue maintenance and muscle growth.
In theory, if you are very serious about your training you might need to increase formula dose. You should never increase your free protein intake without your doctors/dietitians approval. Allowed free protein amount is dependant on your Phe tolerance and has to be adjusted accordingly by a professional.

Muscle Build

:) Seems to me that protein is needed to build muscle. I do not know to much about Biology.

But if one looks at athletes they eat protein to build don't they? Best advice is get with your

Dietician and they will be able to recommend the correct way to do this.
