Hello, my name is Merla, I am 19 years old and come from Germany. I finish school at the beginning of July and would like to go abroad as an au pair for about 10 months, probably to Ireland. So far I have no experience with a longer stay abroad and PKU. What about the amino acid mixture and also foods with little protein in the country? Has anyone had similar experiences in Ireland or other countries and can tell me about them?

#1 Merla good to see you here. The best information can always be provided by the local PKU association. In this case this is PKU Ireland (https://pku.ie/). Traveling abroad is no obstacle with a bit of planning ahead. Formula would be easiest sent over by relatives from home - but for low protein food you can source that easily.

Thank you very much for your answer, Gregor.

What about your plans? Have you found a place as au pair abroad? And if so, how does it work for you with PKU?

I have arrived safely in Ireland and live here with a really great family. My expectations were really exceeded and I am very happy to have gone to Ireland.

The food is also really relaxed. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, but there are also some foods with less protein available locally. I simply have food like pasta, flour and bread sent to Ireland. Of course, it's harder to watch your diet when you're in a completely different environment and experiencing so much at the same time. But I've also had very good experiences in restaurants. I've always had something vegetarian or vegan, which had a bit more protein but was still okay for me. So I've had a lot of positive experiences here and would recommend everyone to take the step and give it a try.

That sounds great! 😄Enjoy the rest of your stay!
